[Yasuko’s Let’s Enjoy! Thailand – Phuket Special!] #01 Blue Canyon Country Club

Blue Canyon Country Club is rated as “the most difficult and most beautiful golf course in Asia” and is a mecca for golfers who would like to experience the course at least once.

View the dramatic, impressive layouts of the 9th and 18th holes from the club house atrium.

This course has received a great number of prestigious awards, including “Thailand’s Best Golf Course”, “Asia’s Best Golf Course”, “Best Championship Course in Asia”, and “Top 500 Holes in the World (17th Hole of Canyon Course)”. As such, this course deserves to be the first stop for those who come to Phuket to play.

Vivid, beautiful flowers welcome golfers.

I learned about the Blue Canyon Country Club when the course hosted the European tour “Jonnie Walker Classics Tournament” in 1998. During this tournament, Tiger Woods defeated Ernie Els in a playoff with a dramatic come-from-behind victory.

Photos from the memorial tournament are on display along the walls of the club house.

Tiger Woods’ victory that put Blue Canyon on the map overnight.

I was surprised that such a beautiful, strategic course, which demands the best of elite professionals, existed in Thailand, and I became determined to play here one day.

Yasuko, with her shots on point having succeeded in her bid to play.

A 10-minute drive from Phuket International Airport, this resort is home to the “Canyon Course”, completed in 1991, and the “Lake Course”, which was added in 1999, for a total of 36 holes.

Hole 2 – Par 3, 182 Yards: With plenty of distance and bunkers flanking the green on both sides, attack calmly with a focus on direction.

The accommodations are complete with a relaxing interior. If arriving in the afternoon, I recommend spending a night before going out for rounds the next day.

As one of Asia’s best courses, your rounds are bound to be pleasurable. The bunkers are also kept in prime condition.

Maintaining a healthy sense of pressure, you finish each hole smoothly… or so you would hope.

Hole 9 – Par 5, 490 Yards: Hidden in the astounding view lies a stretch peppered with traps.

This course, which flows blissfully as if to symbolize the wonder of Thailand, will show its teeth at Hole 9. Creeks from the large pond that dominates the left side splits the fairway twice, while a mound stands before the green and banks right at a 90-degree angle. My legs stiffen with fear as I hit straight into the traps. Losing all confidence, I face the back nine with a sense of sorrow.

Hole 13 – Par 4, 365 Yards: At the 90-degree dogleg-right past the lake, you’ll find the Memorial Plate of Tiger Woods, commemorating the time he “drove it on to the green in one shot.”

A different beast altogether from the front nine, don’t be surprised if you’re battered and bruised as you approach the signature Hole 14.

Hole 14 – Par 3, 143 Yards: As you approach this pristinely natural and preserved island green, your dejected spirits will be immediately invigorated!!

Even if Instagram isn’t your thing, I highly recommend you take a snapshot of this place.

Even though you fell for the trap and hit the ball into the water, the astounding beauty keeps your spirits high. But the drop zone is no walk in the park, so stay sharp.

Hole 17 – Par 3, 197 Yards: Ranked in Golf Magazine’s “Top 500 Holes in the World”, the difficulty of this long green fluctuates with its pin placement.

Before I knew it, I was at the 18th hole. The beautiful hole that I viewed from the club house seemed like a distant memory. The only thing on my mind was avoiding the lake that prominently sat to my right, as I hit my driver.

Hole 18 – Par 4, 327 Yards: Approach from the left and avoid the big lake to the right.

This is where we come to the emotional finale, and for this, I’d like you to watch the video. All I will say is, “The golf gods were on my side that day.”

The talented and reliable caddies.
